FDA Approves First Contact Lens That Gets Darker In Sunlight
The FDA has approved a new contact lens that gets darker in sunlight and may make wearing sunglasses a thing of the past. Johnson & Johnson Vision has been working for over a decade with 1,000 clinical trial patients to develop a contact that gets darker in the sunlight. On April 11th, 2018 Johnson & Johnson Vision got approval from the FDA to put to market the ACUVUE OASYS® with Transitions® Light Intelligent Technology™.
Everyday we are bombarded with artificial light and UV rays which can negatively impact our eye comfort, vision, and health. We compensate by squinting, shielding our eyes or dimming lights. The ACUVUE OASYS® with Transitions® automatically adapt to help the eye manage different types of light at varying intensities of brightness.
The two-week reusable, spherical contact lens will be marketed by Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc. and will be commercially available in first half of 2019. The FDA warns that this lens should not be worn overnight and should not be worn in underwater. We will keep you updated and let you know when these lens come to market. Stay Tuned!
