Sceral contact lens are great for treating a condition called Keratoconus. Keratoconus happens when the cornea (clear dome part of your eye) begins to thin and bulge outward. This will cause vision to become blurred and distorted. There are two ways to treat keratoconus. Patients who suffer can either get a corneal transplant or can wear prescription glasses/contacts. Regular contacts do not have the structural support to prop the cornea up, nor do they have the necessary space for a liquid reservoir. Patients will have to be fit with a hard gas permeable lens or Scleral contact.
Scleral contact lenses are large-diameter gas permeable lenses that are designed to vault over the entire cornea and rest on the “white” part of your eye called the sclera. In doing so, scleral lenses functionally replace an irregular cornea with a perfectly smooth surface. This in turn corrects vision problems caused by keratoconus and other corneal irregularities.
Dry eye sufferers may also benefit from scleral contact lenses. Scleral lenses create a space between the cornea and the lens. This space acts like a fluid reservoir to provide comfort for people with server dry eye.
