What is Lasik Surgery

LASIK Surgery is used to correct the following vision problems Myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.

The LASIK procedure is performed by ophthalmologists, medical doctors who specialize in surgical treatments of the eye. Here is a general outline of the procedure:

Anesthetic eye drops are applied to the eye.
The LASIK surgeon creates a protective flap to access the inner corneal tissue. During this part of the procedure, your vision dims and becomes blurry for about a minute. After the flap is created you are able to see the flashing fixation light of the laser and the bright lights used for the procedure.
Next, the inner layers of your cornea receive computer-controlled pulses of cool laser light. Although the laser light is invisible, the laser makes a clicking sound as it gently reshapes the inner corneal layer to improve and in many cases, eliminate your prescription. During this part of the procedure, an eye-tracking device tracks your eye movements to ensure precise correction.
Following the re-shaping of the tissue, the LASIK surgeon carefully repositions and aligns the flap to its original position. Protective shields are placed over your eye to prevent accidental rubbing as the flap heals naturally and securely over the next several hours.

Different Types of LASIK

Everyone’s eyes are different. A pre-procedure consultation with TLC will help determine the right type of laser eye surgery for you.

Custom LASIK is a laser vision correction procedure that helps your surgeon customize the laser treatment to your individual eyes. This procedure may result in your vision being clearer and sharper than ever before.
Bladeless LASIK uses a gentle laser to create a precise, uniform corneal flap. As the name implies, no blades are used in this customizable eye surgery.
Topography-Guided LASIK is the latest advancement in laser technology. Take LASIK to the next level, ask about Contoura® Vision.
Wavefront Technology creates a customized map of the unique attributes of your visual system that transfers to the laser, enabling your LASIK surgeon to address your individual visual requirements. Wavefront technology is used in custom LASIK surgery, including custom bladeless LASIK.

Am I a Candidate for LASIK?

To be eligible for LASIK surgery, potential candidates must meet the following criteria:

Age: Candidates must be at least 18 years old.
General health: LASIK candidates must be in good general health, and should not have certain health problems, including uncontrolled diabetes, autoimmune or collagen vascular disease, or take any medication or have any condition that compromises the immune response.
Eye health: Candidates should be free of eye diseases including keratoconus, glaucoma, cataracts, corneal disease and certain retinal and optic nerve diseases. LASIK surgery candidates should not have certain eye conditions including herpes simplex and herpes zoster.
Eye problems: LASIK patients should make their eye doctor aware of certain eye problems including amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (muscle imbalance), or any recurrent, residual or active eye conditions that may influence healing. Other conditions that should be discussed with the doctor include keloid scarring with previous surgical healing, back problems and claustrophobia. Please make your eye doctor aware of any mental health conditions, as these may also affect your LASIK surgery or recovery.
Eye injury: Patients should not have any eye infections or injury.
Nursing/pregnancy: Candidates should not be nursing or pregnant when undergoing the LASIK procedure. Hormones may affect the stability of your prescription, so pregnant or nursing women are not eligible to pursue LASIK surgery until three menstrual cycles after nursing has been discontinued.
Dry eye condition: Patients should not continuously suffer from dry eyes.
Stable vision: Candidates’ vision must be stable for at least one year prior to the procedure date.
Contacts: Prior to your LASIK surgery consultation and LASIK procedure, you must not wear contact lenses for a certain length of time. The precise length will be determined by your doctor on an individual basis. This ensures corneal stability and accurate assessment of your prescription prior to the LASIK surgery procedure.

What to expect after LASIK Surgery

Most Patients after surgery will be able to return to work within a day or two of surgery, and will be amazed how there sight has become clearer. Patients will be restricted from doing any exercising, sports, swimming, or any task that involves a lot of dust or dirt. Patients will have to wear sunglasses after surgery and protect their eyes at night. It is not unusual for patients to experience pain or dry eye in the first few weeks after surgery.

It is also very important that patients make appointments to see their Eye Doctor after Surgery. For the first few months they will check the healing process and monitor your prescription for any changes. TLC offers a Lifetime commitment as long as the patient makes their post-op appointments and sees their Eye Doctor every year.

Complete post-operative appointments after treatment.
Complete annual eye exams with Somers Eye Center.
Ask your TLC Laser Eye Center for complete details.
Certain changes in your visual system may affect your ability to have an enhancement.

Benefits of the TLC Lifetime Commitment®

Our intention is to help patients who come to TLC maintain their highest quality vision throughout their entire lives.

Patients who have visual changes with time may require additional treatment. They will receive another same-technology procedure without charge at any TLC Laser Eye Center in North America.
Qualifying patients are automatically enrolled in the TLC Lifetime Commitment®program upon completion of their laser vision correction.
Patients needing or wanting a Custom LASIK enhancement can undergo the procedure for the difference between the current price of conventional LASIK and the cost for Custom LASIK. If the patient had Custom LASIK originally, their Custom LASIK enhancement is free.

Every patient who chooses TLC for LASIK is covered under the TLC Standard Enhancement Policy. If a patient’s vision worsens anytime within a year, we will cover the cost of an enhancement treatment that uses the same technology.
